the Villa Straylight
sitting by the fire

You approach the fireplace, with the panther's large green eyes closely following your movements. You sit down near the fire, a few feet away from the great cat. Once he is convinced that you're not doing anything interesting, he resumes his catnap. The thick, soft carpet is even warmer here, and it feels incredibly comfortable as you sink deeply into it. There must be some kind of solid floor down there somewhere, since there is sufficient support to make moving around on this carpet easy. You can't tell how far down that surface might be, because there doesn't seem to be anything hard under the warm, silken tufts.

Still idly running your fingers through the strange carpet, you look up at the huge fireplace in front of you. It seems to be simply carved out of the black stone wall, its floor not far above the top of the equally black carpet. It occupies almost a quarter of this wall of the room, wide enough for both you and the panther to spread out in front of it, and it looks to be so deep that, even if the fire were out, you wouldn't be able to reach the back of the fireplace without stepping into it.

Scattered throughout the fireplace are innumerable logs of various sizes in varying states of immolation. The warmth of the fire feels wonderful. Somehow, even with so much fire, this room isn't too hot to still be comfortable.

Some of the logs are smouldering, red coals glowing from within the small cracks and large splits. Others are brightly burning; orange, red, and white flames leaping gaily from the wood. Occasionally, the gentle, haunting music is interrupted by a quiet pop from the fire as a few glowing white cinders detach from the logs and dance amid the flames for a moment before burning out and fading into ash.
