Apparently in some small towns a common way to relieve boredom is to tie the laces of a pair of sneakers together and throw them up in the air so that they wrap around the electrical cables running between telephone poles. The mystery is not why this is so amusing (although I don't have a good explanation for that, either) but how and why someone would go to the trouble of doing that with a single shoe.
